The Vlacq Prefix is now well known at the highest level in endurance, particularly horses by Shah Shadow and Vlacq Khazad. For a small stud our bloodlines are consistent in reaching that elusive 100 mile mark. Several emerging performance Arabian studs and astute private breeders are choosing our bloodlines with their eye on a bright future. The stallions are at stud by private treaty and there are usually some youngsters for sale.
A little Arabian blood does wonders and our Part-Breds are to be seen show jumping, eventing and shining in the dressage arenas too; stock sired by Shah Shadow and Hipu Who have BE and BD points as well as countless jumping ponies, working hunters and pleasure horses.
They are no stranger to the triclours in the showring either whether they be WHPs, Hacks or Riding Horses. The beauty of the Part-Bred is often in its versatility, with many contesting Cherif, BSHA and WPB classes as well. There are of course certain recipes that just work and the marriage of Shah Shadow to Huttons Ambo Chloe was such a perfect match. From their very first foal, to the very last (15 in total) each one has been a champion in hand or under saddle as PBAs, PBWs and RPB, an accomplished PC eventer, endurance horse or dressage star. Every one with a charming disposition and engaging personality.
Stud proprietor Sue is an AHS Panel Judge and accomplished artist. Daughter Laura is deputy editor and regular feature writer for The Arabian Magazine. Both are always happy to talk horses and share the ups and downs of being bitten by the Arab bug.
Sue: "I owe it all to a gold watch and marmalade..."
Originally riding for a show jumping producer's yard in Oxford, while working and studying at night school, Sue was given the ride on a very green Arabian stallion that was to shape her future. He was Ferozeshah (Shair x Scindigo Blue). A small number of Arabs and IDs came to North Wales with Sue and David in the 1970s and Ferozeshah took pride of place.
Very carefully selected bloodlines have been introduced over the years with every family proving itself under saddle along the way; daughters and granddaughters of our foundation mares are retained for line-preservation. The herd at Vlacq Stud is noted for it's continuity.
"As we go into our fifth generation we can still see so much of the foundation horses in this foal's outlook, or that youngsters cadence; a toss of the head, natural jumping ability or the bold and playful relish they have for work. It is such a pleasure to see family traits passed down through generations, the improvements that certain breedings have made and, most of all, to see our horses 'perform' for us and their new owners!"
